Lowball Ranking: Ace-to-five

Lowball is a form of poker. It has three common variations. The most common variation of Lowball is known as the Ace-to-five low. The Ace-to-five low is used to evaluate poker low hands. It is an extremely popular variation of Lowball. It is most commonly played in high-low split games.

Lowball is a low hand game. In such games, pairs are not considered to be good. They are counted against the player. This basically means that a player who has a hand with pairs will lose against a player who has a hand with no pairs. If a player has a hand with one pair, and another player has a hand with two pairs, then the player with one pair will win against the player who has two pairs in his hand. If neither of the players has a pair in their hand, then the highest card in each players hand is compared. However, unlike in traditional poker, when it comes to Lowball, the player with the highest card loses. In Ace-to-five low, hands like straights and flushes are not considered. Also, the Ace card is played as the lowest card.

If one player has a hand consisting of 8-5-4-3-2 and his opponent has a hand of 9-7-6-4-3, the player with the 8-5-4-3-2 hand wins as 8 is lower than 9. However, if another player has a 7-6-5-4-3 hand, then he wins as 7 is lower than both 8, as well as 9. The fact that 7-6-5-4-3 is also a straight is not considered. In terms of pairs, a hand of A-A-9-5-3 would win against a hand of 2-2-5-4-3 as Ace is a low card. However, if a player has a hand with no pair, then both, A-A-9-5-3 as well as 2-2-5-4-3 would lose.

An Ace-to-five game can be played with or without a joker. The most common way of playing is with a joker. The joker is the wild card and can be used as the lowest card that is not already a part of the hand.
