Lowball Ranking: Ace-to-sixThe Ace-to-six variation of poker is not as common as the Ace-to-five low type. However, the Ace-to-six method has its own fan following in certain parts of the world. It is popularly played in the eastern area of the United States and is also the game of choice in the United Kingdom. In Ace-to-six Lowball, pairs are not considered to be good. They are counted against the player. This basically means that a player who has a hand with pairs will lose against a player who has a hand with no pairs. If a player has a hand with one pair, and another player has a hand with two pairs, then the player with one pair will win against the player who has two pairs in his hand. If neither of the players has a pair in their hand, then the highest card in each players hand is compared. However, unlike in traditional poker, when it comes to Lowball, the player with the highest card loses. In the Ace-to-six low variation, straights and flushes are counted. They are also considered to be high and are therefore not good cards for any player to have. Aces are counted as a low card. If one player has a hand consisting of 9-6-4-3-2 and his opponent has a hand of 8-5-6-4-3, the player with the 8-5-6-4-3 hand wins as 8 is lower than 9. However, if another player has a 7-6-5-4-3 hand, then he will lose even though 7 is lower than both 8, as well as 9, as 7-6-5-4-3 is a straight. In terms of pairs, a hand of A-A-9-5-3 would win against a hand of 2-2-5-4-3 as Ace is a low card. However, if a player has a hand with no pair, then both, 2-2-5-4-3 as well as A-A-9-5-3 would lose. The game is termed as Ace-to-six low because the best hand possible in this game is a 6-4-3-2-A hand. In terms of Lowball terminology, low hands are called by the highest card in the hand. A hand in which the highest card is a 9 is known as ‘a nine’. A nine can be beaten by ‘an eight’. Hands are commonly referred to by the two highest cards as well. A hand with 8-6-5-4-2 can be referred to as ‘an eight-six’.
