The Labouchere System of Betting

The Labouchere System is also known as the ‘Cancellation’ System. It fits into the Negative Progression Betting category of betting systems. In Negative Progression Betting, a player’s wager is increased when he loses. The purpose of this system is to reverse the player’s unlucky streak.

This system of betting has a number of variations. The easiest way for a player to use this particular system is to pen down a set of numbers. For example, a player could write down 1 2 3 4 5 6. The set chosen depends entirely on the player and can be long or short. There is no mandatory sequence. The numbers chosen are dependant on the game chosen by the player as well as the odds of the wager.

Each number in the set of numbers stands for the amount bet in terms of units or chips. The player bets the total of the first and last number in the set decided by him. For example, if the set decided by him is 1 2 3 4 5 6, then the player will bet 1 plus 6, that is, 7 units.

If the player wins this bet, he will cancel the first and last number, and calculate the total of the next last numbers (2 and 5). If he wins, he will cross out the 2 and 5 and move on to 3 and 4, the last remaining numbers. If he wins that bet as well, he will have finished one game. This is also known as making a ‘coup’. Once the game is over, the player can start a new game.

On the other hand, if the player loses the first game, he will have to add the total of the first and last numbers to the end of the number set. The set would thus become 1 2 3 4 5 6 7. The player’s next bet would accordingly be for 8 units as it would be calculated as 1 plus 7.

In mathematical terms, it has been seen that once a player completes a set, he always makes a profit. However, when it comes to using this system, players should keep in mind that they could easily end up spending huge amounts of money, although they start out betting small.
