These are the most important tips you need to know
for playing poker. Knowledge about the different terms
and betting options will help you play better and win
better.
Each player in a poker game is given 5 cards.
Open: You have the option to ‘open’ the
pot if no other player has done so. To open is to make
the first bet. This amount can be any amount up to
the betting limit.
Check: you have the option to "check" if no other
player has opened the betting until your turn. Checking means that the player
doesn't want to either ‘open’ or quit the game.
Suppose some player has placed a bet. You now have
the option to…
See: To "see" another player is
to match their bet. If a player bets $3, you can "see" their
$3 by investing $3 into the pot.
Raise: To raise, you must "see" the previous bet. Only then
can you increase the bet. Say, the previous player bets a dollar and you
want to bet more than that. Then you have to see the dollar (match it) and
raise (increase the bet in the round) another dollar.
Fold: When another player bets first, you have
the option to fold. To fold is to ‘give up’ your
cards and lose whatever all that you have bet thus far.
It means that you give up early and are out of the round.
Use this option when you consider your hand as very weak
and incompetent.
